Coastal Walks in Ayrshire

Few things beat a refreshing seaside walk on a crisp winter day.

  • Doonfoot Beach to Greenan Castle – This gentle 2-mile stroll along the beach offers breathtaking views of the castle ruins against the dramatic winter sky. Perfect for a peaceful coastal escape. Read more about Greenan Castle here.
  • Ayrshire Coastal Path – Stretching an incredible 106 miles from Glenapp to Skelmorlie, this route can be enjoyed in sections, offering everything from sandy beaches to rugged clifftop paths — ideal for anyone looking to explore more of the Ayrshire coast this winter. The route can be broken down into several short tidal sections. • Portencross, Seamill: A hidden gem on the Ayrshire coast, this walk combines sea views, rugged cliffs, and a visit to the historic Portencross Castle. On bright winter days, the views across to the Isle of Arran are breathtaking, making it a perfect short walk for photography lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Woodland and Park Walks

For those who prefer the calm of sheltered woodlands and open parkland, Ayrshire offers plenty of inviting options.

  • Dean Castle Country Park (Kilmarnock) – Enjoy a leisurely loop through frosty woodland and around the castle grounds — a peaceful winter escape right in the heart of town.
  • Rozelle Park (Ayr) – With its flat, well-kept paths, duck ponds, and art installations, Rozelle is ideal for leisurely winter strolls and family walks.
  • Culzean Country Park (Maybole) – Combining forest trails, clifftop views, and the grandeur of Culzean Castle, this park offers something for everyone — especially those looking for a full day out.
  • Ayr Gorge Woodlands Reserve (Failford) – Follow the River Ayr through ancient woodland for some of the most beautiful riverside scenery in the region.

Hill and Scenic Walks

If you’re after breathtaking views and a bit of a challenge, Ayrshire’s hill walks won’t disappoint.

  • Knock Hill (Largs) – A local gem offering panoramic views across the Firth of Clyde. On a clear winter’s day, the scenery is truly spectacular. You will be able to see across to the Isle of Arran and the islands of Great Cumbrae and Little Cumbrae.
  • Loudoun Hill (Darvel) – This short but rewarding walk combines history and landscape, with ties to William Wallace and views stretching across the valley.
  • Lynn Glen (Dalry) - A stunning woodland gorge walk leading to dramatic waterfalls on the Lynn Burn. The trail is particularly beautiful in winter when the falls are at their fullest, offering a peaceful, atmospheric escape surrounded by moss-covered trees and rugged scenery.

Family-Friendly Winter Walks

For those walking with little ones, these destinations offer fun, accessible routes with plenty to see and do.

  • Eglinton Country Park (Irvine) – Ideal for families, with a children’s play area, open green spaces, and castle ruins to explore. A true local favourite with varied paths through woodlands, a tranquil loch, and castle ruins to explore. The on-site tea room is perfect for a post-walk warm-up.
  • Kelburn Castle and Estate (Largs) – A magical spot featuring woodland walks, adventure play areas, and even an alpaca field. The café and visitor centre are open on weekends — perfect for a warm drink after your walk.
